Getting your tan from a professional tanner should take all the guesswork from you as a client and is why as a tanner it is so important to understand the science behind tans!
A professional tanner will be able to assess your underlying skin tone, understand your wants when it comes to depth of colour and also match how long you have up your sleeve to “marinate”. All those factors play a role in the tan we would choose for the client.
Skin tone warm? A Violet base should be used.
Skin tone cool? A Green base solution should be used
Can’t decide .. that’s ok as a Brown Base solution covers the “neutral” category and is typically safe for all skin tones.
Tanning over the years has come a long way and there are many more solutions on the market which means there are now other different base colours like Grey and Ash.
Depth of colour can be achieved by choosing a specific DHA % (Dihydroxyacetone) level . The lower the DHA level the lighter the tan achieved. To achieve the perfect tan the DHA % used on a client is decided depending on where the client sits on the Fitzpatrick scale.

Understanding the right amount of solution to apply (as the skin can only absorb so much) makes the tanner’s job important to not under or overspray the client. It then relies on the client following their post tan instructions to achieve the perfect tan!
